Why do you volunteer for Grampian Hospital Radio?
People sometimes ask why I volunteer with Grampian Hospital Radio, and the answer really goes back more than 50 years.
I first became involved in hospital and community radio when I was 15, simply because I loved music and broadcasting. But it didn’t take long to realise that hospital radio is about something much more important than that.
When someone is in hospital, even a short stay can be lonely or worrying. A friendly voice, a favourite song, or a familiar programme can make a real difference to someone’s day. Hospital radio can’t treat patients medically, of course, but it can lift spirits and provide a sense of companionship — and sometimes that’s exactly what people need.
Over the years I’ve presented many different programmes, but the aim has always been the same: to bring good music, interesting stories, and a bit of warmth to listeners who might be going through a difficult time.
There’s also something very special about the volunteer spirit behind it. Grampian Hospital Radio has been “your friend by the bedside” for decades, and it’s run entirely by people who simply want to give something back to the community.
After all these years I still feel the same way I did when I started: if a programme I present helps even one patient feel a little less alone, then it’s been time very well spent.
