Volunteers Week - Kay Drummond

Why volunteer? Is it simply about giving something back?

Over the years, I’ve grown to realise that it feels much more than that. It’s also what you get back in return that makes it truly special.

Our Mum was always the first to organise the Kirk jumble sale; annual door-to-door collecting for those in need; and a long-standing WRVS volunteer at Dr Gray’s hospital shop.

Dad was the athletics coach, the football coach, a keen volunteer on school committees, and a willing supporter of whatever Mum got us all roped into! 😊

It was never seen as a duty, rather just a natural way of providing help where it was needed. And of widening their social network - and having a laugh.

Giving up time to help others is never a chore. Time spent in the company of others for a cause that is close to your heart can bring so much, all round.

Being part of the team at Grampian Hospital Radio has led to the most heartwarming, comforting and inspirational chats with people who have allowed me to see life and situations from a new perspective.

I’ve held hands, sung songs, shared tears and laughter with families and individuals facing some of their most emotional days and hours.

Each time, I’ve walked from the wards feeling uplifted, inspired and refocused on what really matters.

I’ve also pushed myself to be creative for the cause and found so much fulfilment along the way.

There are countless opportunities to bring your own strengths and passions to volunteering.
To me, it’s a perfect mix of caring enough to give back, while also being inspired to be a better person.

That’s #volunteering.
