A proud moment for Grampian Hospital Radio as the station officially celebrates receiving the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Grampian Hospital Radio is delighted to celebrate the presentation of the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, which was awarded to the station in November 2025 in recognition of the dedication, commitment and contribution of its volunteers to the local community.

The prestigious award, which is the highest honour a voluntary organisation can receive in the UK, recognises the outstanding contribution made by the team at Grampian Hospital Radio over many years.

The award was formally presented by Deputy Lieutenant for Aberdeen, Maggie Openshaw, at a special event held at the station’s studios on 11 August 2026.

The presentation was a very special occasion for everyone involved with the station and provided an opportunity to celebrate the hard work of both current and past volunteers who have helped make Grampian Hospital Radio such an important part of the community.

For decades, the station has provided entertainment, companionship and a friendly voice to patients, visitors and staff across Aberdeen’s hospitals. Behind the programmes, requests, interviews and music is a dedicated team of volunteers who give their time and enthusiasm to keep the service running.

Receiving the King’s Award is a tremendous honour and a fitting recognition of the contribution made by those volunteers.

Speaking about the presentation, Chairman Neil Fraser said:

“We are incredibly proud to receive the King’s Award for Voluntary Service. This award belongs to every volunteer, past and present, who has given their time, energy and passion to Grampian Hospital Radio. It is wonderful to have the award formally presented at our studios and to be able to celebrate this achievement together.”

The presentation by Maggie Openshaw marked a significant milestone in the history of Grampian Hospital Radio and gave the station an opportunity to look back with pride while also looking forward to continuing its work for the hospitals and communities it serves.

The King’s Award is not just an award for Grampian Hospital Radio — it is an award for the volunteers who make the station what it is.
